Loose tension will cause immediate and destructive wearing of shears.

It only takes a few seconds to check and adjust the tensions on your shears. This should be done at the beginning of every work day to:

  • reduce the premature loss of your sharp cutting edge
  • reduce the chances of causing a serious nick or abrasion in the blade
  • reduce the chance of dropping your shears when they are loose

KEEPING AN EDGE...
TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR SHEARS

We are happy to answer all questions and clarify any misinformation you may have about your high-quality shears.
Proper Sharpening
Both blades are pristine.

Improper Sharpening

  1. Too much critical metal has been removed from shear leaving the inside blade exposed.
  2. The tips are now too pointed.
  3. The shear is now nicked and pitted along the inside edge.

Note: Adjust tension with the blades closed.

Hold your shears by the thumb ring with the point at 12 o'clock
Open the other blade until the point is at 9 o'clock

Let the finger ring free fall

  1. If your shears have a regular tension screw, the blade must stop at 11 o'clock when released.
  2. If your shears have a hand adjustable tension system that clicks when it is turned OR a rubber base under the knob, the blade should stay at the 9 o'clock position when released.
  3. If your shears have any other type of hand adjustable tension system, the finger ring blade should stop at the 10 o'clock position
THERE ARE THREE SETTINGS: THEY VARY WITH EACH TENSION SYSTEM.
  • Adjustments should be made as closely to these examples as possible.
  • For regular screw systems, use the tool provided with the shears or use a screwdriver that fits snugly. Be careful not to damage the screw or shears. With the blades closed, place shears against a solid wood surface while tightening.
  • If you have difficulty adjusting your shears' tension, clean them and try again.

CLEAN AND OIL SHEARS WITH
WD-40 SPRAY LUBRICANT

  • Simple Facts You Should Know About Maintaining And Sharpening Your Shears
  • Each scissor blade is sharpened and honed to fit its specific individual function (i.e. convex single and double bevel, hollow ground, etc.) Shears must not be defaced, disfigured, or detempered.
  • Haura Ichiban (lined inside edge) must be free of pits and nicks to allow a smooth and quiet ride.
  • Every shear should be cleaned and oiled often, especially after cutting color-treated or permed hair. Use WD-40 spray lubricant to prevent oxidation of the metal from chemicals and to reduce the need for frequent sharpening, and ensure long shear life.
  • If you have had your shears sharpened in the past by another service and you were not satisfied with the quality of the job, we will reconstruct the blade at no extra charge!
If too much critical metal was removed, we will put on the appropriate edge; if your convexed edge was replaced with a bevel, we will roll the edge. These are the most common mistakes made in sharpening convex scissors.
  • Furthermore, all repairs such as balancing, refurbishing of bevel, setting and straightening of blades, and replacement of screws and plastic silencers are done free of charge (finger rest extra).
